"Zaporozhian Cossacks" is the original title of one of the most famous paintings by the Ukrainian artist Ilya Repin (1844-1930), whose surname, due to long-term Russification, is better known in its Russian version as Ilya Repin. Repin is a descendant of Cossack families from Slobozhanshchyna, and his surname comes from the Cossack nickname Ripa. The artist himself signed his paintings "Рѣпинъ", which sounded like Ripyn according to the then spelling. Ripyn instead of Repin is not a new, but a return to the old form of the correct spelling of the surname.
