“Ukrainian Railroad Ladies” is a series of portraits of level crossing guards and traffic safety controllers of the Ukrainian Railways.
At the same time, this project aims to find out why the relevant professions still remain relevant, given the almost complete automation of railway crossings within the country. The author tries to explore some anthropological and social aspects of this phenomenon, as well as to highlight the general features of the functioning of Ukrainian railway connections.
While working on the project, Sasha Maslov – known for his socially documentary portraits, where the focus is always on the hero in his subject environment – visited different corners of Ukraine.
“Ukrainian Railroad Ladies” is more than 50 photographs of female workers of the Ukrainian Railways. They seem to be a symbol of a certain constancy against the background of the sometimes too fragile realities of the Ukrainian present. Each time emerging from their incomprehensible timelessness, the heroines of Sasha Maslov’s portraits seem to remind us that the world around us is probably not so fleeting.
