The basis of this book is the "Notes" of the Baltic German Baron von Kampenhausen, which he made during his travels in the 1780s-90s.
His notes are valuable evidence not only of the beauty and richness of the nature of Ukraine and its neighbors, but also of the socio-political realities of that time. Kampenhausen traveled through regions rich in historical events and cultural heritage, met with local residents, studied their way of life, customs, and traditions.
It is worth noting that Kampenhausen's work is primarily the view of a European who, although he was in Russian service, had a completely Western education and worldview, unclouded by the complex of Russian messianism or "loyalty."
