The book by Belgian sociologist of culture Pascal Gielen asks a question that is increasingly pressing in modern societies: how to overcome a culture of distrust.
The author draws attention to a paradox: the more societies try to create trust through rules, contracts, audits and procedures, the stronger the mutual suspicion between people, institutions and businesses becomes. In his opinion, true trust arises not from regulations, but from what he calls the cultural commons – the space of shared life where customs, practices, knowledge and values are formed. Trust begins with a willingness to share vulnerability, and a shared cultural space creates the conditions for such exchange.
Pascal Gielen is a sociologist of culture and professor at the Antwerp Institute for Research in the Arts (ARIA), where he heads the Culture Commons Quest Office platform, which explores the role of culture and creative communities in society.
