The first and only illustrated version of Tolkien’s famous The Hobbit was published in 1990 and has since become one of the most popular graphic novels in the English-speaking world. It is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a stately, comfortable hobbit who unwittingly joins a dangerous expedition of dwarves when they set out to reclaim their own treasures, which have been stolen by a dragon.
Escaping trolls, goblins and giant spiders, escaping elven dungeons, and conversing with the dragon Smaug the Terrible are just some of Bilbo’s adventures. But there was also joy: discovering true friendship, enjoying delicious treats, laughter and songs.
The graphic novel The Hobbit with masterful drawings by David Wenzel and text by J.R.R. Tolkien in the abridged version by children's writer Charles Dixon and translated by Elena O'Lear will be a wonderful discovery for those who are first introduced to the world of Middle-earth, and will give fans of Tolkien's work the joy of a new encounter with their favorite characters.
