The Fall of Arthur, J. R. R. Tolkien's only literary foray into the world of the legends of the British King Arthur, may well be his most refined and masterful achievement in addressing Old English alliterative verse.
Here he reinterprets the ancient Arthurian tales, bringing to them an all-encompassing sense of formidable grandeur and fate - whether he is telling of Arthur's expedition across the sea to distant pagan lands, or of Guinevere's escape from Camelot, or of the great naval battle after Arthur's return to Britain, or of the traitor Mordred, or of Lancelot's painful hesitations in his castle.
Unfortunately, The Fall of Arthur is one of the few great epic poems that Tolkien never finished, and it was first published by his son, Christopher Tolkien, the faithful custodian of the great master's legacy. He accompanies the poem with three brilliant essays in which he discusses the Arthurian literary tradition, the evolution of The Fall of Arthur as reflected in his father's drafts, and the poem's connections to the world of Middle-earth.
