Thirteen-year-old Bassem lives with a large family in a small village in southern Lebanon. He grows up to be an inquisitive and sensitive boy, in love with the nature of his native land. Due to congenital blindness, Bassem learns the world in a special way, relying on other senses, and dreams of finding his place in it. When his cousin Zeinab begins to read aloud to him, he discovers books for himself, and also reveals a love of learning and a talent for words.
One day, Bassem’s life changes dramatically: he has to leave the village and his family and go to a specialized school for children with visual impairments in Beirut.
In the novel “The Color of the Air,” the modern Lebanese writer Abdo Wazen describes various aspects of the lives of teenagers, colored by the cultural and social specifics of Lebanese society, through the story of Bassem: the search for oneself, understanding with peers, family relationships, first love, etc.
