In September 1989, seventeen-year-old Silva disappears in a small Croatian town during a fishing festival. A hot-footed investigation yields no results. Meanwhile, turbulent political events in Croatia — the collapse of the system, social changes, and war — begin to overshadow this tragic incident, which everyone eventually forgets about, except for Silva’s relatives, who continue their search.
The novel “Red Water” is a twenty-seven-year story of one family, the search for answers, the fates of people somehow connected to Silvia and her disappearance. At the same time, it is also the almost thirty-year tragic history of Croatia, against the backdrop of which the events of the novel develop.
Jurica Pavićić’s novel “Red Water” has been awarded the French Prize for the best translated crime novel of 2021.
