“It is time to free ourselves from the conjunctural influence of the “current moment” in order to finally, “without anger and prejudice,” look at the Koliivshchyna from different points of view, accompanying the events of society, to assess how they were perceived by different social classes, and what significance they had for their present and future fate. In a word, the Koliivshchyna must be shown on an appropriate scale not only against the broadest historical background, but also as an integral part of historical progress. The work presented to the readers’ judgment contains an attempt to resolve these issues.”
The Koliivshchyna is a Cossack-peasant uprising in Right-Bank Ukraine in 1768-1770, which was led by the Zaporozhian Maksym Zaliznyak, and his closest associate was the centurion of the Uman court Cossacks Ivan Gonta. The event deeply impressed contemporaries and remained an inexhaustible source for reflection for subsequent generations.
The proposed classic work by the Polish historian Władysław Serczyk (1935-2014) is being translated for the first time and contains many unique authorial conclusions, which not only have not lost their relevance over time, but on the contrary, have become more obvious.
The text of the work is supplemented with translator's notes that explain, supplement or refute the information provided by the author on the basis of current research.
The book also contains color illustrations - portraits of that time and modern historical and artistic reconstructions of Shamenkov S.I.
