In the book, based on extensive archival material from the collections of Russia (St. Petersburg, Moscow) and Ukraine (Kyiv), an attempt is made to rethink the events that took place in Right-Bank Ukraine in the middle of the 18th century and eventually led to the Koliiv Oblast (Haidamaki uprising in 1768), provoked the Russo-Turkish war, the division of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the redistribution of the political map of Europe. This was followed by the liquidation of the Zaporizhzhya Sich and the autonomy of the Ukrainian Hetmanship.
Koliivshchyna became a watershed between the traditional ideals of the past and the new reality of geopolitics at the end of the 18th century. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Ukrainian Hetmanship, and the Ottoman Empire were now only a shadow of their former power. The world has changed, and the Haydamaks still lived by the old big illusions.
