"Katerina" is one of the most famous paintings by Taras Shevchenko, created in 1842. It illustrates the tragic fate of a girl, the heroine of the poem of the same name. In his work, Shevchenko condemns the immorality, treachery and cruelty of the Muscovite lords. The painting is also a protest against the prejudices and cruelty of the society of that time. This work has become iconic for Ukrainian culture and is known not only in Ukraine, but also far beyond its borders. The painting is kept in the Taras Shevchenko National Museum in Kyiv.
