Research into the figure of the legendary Kosh Ataman of the Zaporozhian Sich, Ivan Sirko (1605(?)–1680), an outstanding fighter against foreign invaders, whose fame spread far beyond the borders of Ukraine, was hushed up, falsified, and banned both during the tsarist and the vozhdist eras.
In this publication, the author, relying on a wide range of sources found over more than 30 years in the archives of Ukraine, Russia, Poland, and Germany, as well as scientific works and articles by other historians, attempts to fill a gap in Ukrainian historiography, depicting the life and activities of Ivan Sirko as fully as possible.
The book is intended for scholars, politicians, teachers, and students, as well as anyone interested in the history of Ukraine.
