The book represents the largest printed collection of materials on house paintings of the first third of the 20th century to date. Under one cover, copies of sketches of paintings and photographs of “flowered” houses from Dnieper Ukraine, Slobozhanshchyna, Zaporizhzhia, the Black Sea Region and Podillia are collected here for the first time.
Fantastic flowers, bizarre curls and elegant hops were created by painters without an art education, but with knowledge of local artistic practices and a sense of harmony and taste. And this art was studied by people with a great passion for learning about Ukrainian culture. Therefore, the book focuses on both those who created the paintings and those who studied them. Fragments of publications on house paintings created a century ago are intertwined here with a visual narrative and place this art in the context of the time.
The publication contains a translation of key texts into English.
