Distant Horizons. Sofia Yablonska

“Distant Horizons” is the third travelogue by Ukrainian traveler, writer, and photographer Sofia Yablonska, which describes her trip around the world. Yablonska wrote it during her travels in 1934-1935, but she edited it for a long time, so it was first published only in 1939 in Lviv.

This novel resembles a kind of travel diary, which the author turned to in order to capture the most interesting moments of the journey: to record special places, describe disappearing nationalities, to confide the most intimate experiences, such as meetings with a Vietnamese prince, and thoughts on the colonization processes that she observed while traveling through the Dutch and French colonies.

The 2018 edition is part of the art project “TEURA. Sofia Yablonska”, the goal of which is to return Sofia Yablonska to the cultural discourse and establish her as a relevant figure in Ukrainian art. In addition to “Distant Horizons”, the project is publishing two other novels by Sofia – “The Charm of Morocco”, “From the Land of Red and Opium”, as well as a book of her photos taken in the 1930s.
