Before the Future
—The Ukrainian Pavilion at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale.
Before the Future marks the return of the Ukrainian Pavilion to the 2023 Architecture Biennale after a nine-year hiatus. The eponymous catalogue includes texts and images from the curators and collectives, as well as additional articles and essays that expand on the discussions initiated within the project.
The grass-covered earthen fortifications of the Giardini and the dark, enclosed shelter of the Arsenale have become spaces for interaction, where Ukrainian architects, together with practitioners from other fields, present joint statements on how to tell stories in times of war, on the value of collective action in the face of threat, on the diverse themes that unite architects in Ukraine today, on the questions that need to be asked today, facing the future.
Over the course of four months, five temporary collectives present a program of rotating exhibitions across both locations of the Pavilion – on reconstruction, ecology, care, commemoration, and the future. These exhibitions emerge from the Ukrainian context and engage a broad range of participants with the aim of creating spaces and dialogues that foster mutual understanding.
