Spring 1941. The Third Reich celebrates victory.
Having taken control of Germany, Hitler began a series of lightning campaigns that crushed Poland, Denmark, Norway, France, the Scandinavian countries, and then the Balkans. Only Great Britain stood its ground against the Nazis, but even she was beaten, maimed, and close to defeat. And on June 22, 1941, the Nazi dictator turned east and threw his forces into the vastness of the Soviet Union. This was Unternehmen Barbarossa - “Operation Barbarossa”.
Having concluded a non-aggression pact with Hitler back in 1939, Stalin was taken by surprise when the Nazi army, inspired by years of continuous victories, broke through the borders and forced the Red Army to retreat.
The scale of Operation Barbarossa is difficult to comprehend: together with the Allies, the invasion force numbered almost four million men, over half a million vehicles – and even more horses – over seven thousand artillery pieces, almost four thousand tanks and self-propelled guns, and around three thousand aircraft.
